Help a Single Parent became a 501(c)3 in 2019 however the vision & work of this foundation began over a decade before. In December of 2006 co-founder Michael Scott was in a local Norristown bar just days before Christmas & took notice of a young lady in tears. After engaging in a short conversation with her, the young lady disclosed her tears were due to her frustrations of not having any money to provide for her child for Christmas. She didn’t have a tree, food and was struggling with bills and as a single mother had nowhere to turn for support. Mike along with a few people in the bar were able to give the single mother a monetary donation that night to help her and her child out.
“The feeling you get from giving to someone in need is a wonderful feeling” Mike said and vowed to do this every year. After telling this story to Brendan of Bourbon Blue, he agreed to help in these efforts to help single parent families in need for the Christmas holiday. The foundation’s name became The Help a Single Parent for Christmas Foundation. In 2007 Mike and his Wife Katrina along with Bourbon Blue provided three single parent households with a tree, food, clothes and toys for their children. By 2009 Carla Clanagan, founder of In His Eyes Outreach, also join in supporting the mission of providing for single parent households at Christmas. By 2012 The Help a Single Parent for Christmas foundation had grown to helping a number of families providing food, clothing and toys for 20 plus kids per Christmas holiday. The Norristown police and fire companies began to get involved, escorting the caravan of cars filled with Christmas deliveries on Christmas morning. Also in 2012, the foundation’s name changed to the Help a Single Parent Foundation taking Christmas out as it continued to grow. There was now an added focus on helping children & teachers get ready for back to school. In addition HASP gained the support of Gary Simpson from the Norristown Kappa fraternity. He and his chapter have become key partners in supporting the Back to School Drives held annually in August. The Back to School Drives have now grown into a Community Day filled with vendors providing community information, games and activities for the whole family and local live guest speakers and entertainment. We look forward to growing and continuing to serve our community. With the US having one of the world’s highest rate of children living in single-parent households & this is why we will continue our mission to help strengthen the foundation of single parent households.
